Among the most effective ways to sustain the flow of targeted website traffic is to start a forum. People visit and become a part of a forum when they are interested in the topics being discussed and shared in the forum. When you do it the right way, the amount of targeted website traffic you receive on the forum on a daily basis can be quite mind-blowing.

Getting Started

Gone are the days when you had to spend on forum packages. These days they are available free and you can access one of them and customize their appearance as per your requirements. Your forum package will include essential features like the posts, threads, facility for private messaging, creating member accounts, measuring statistics and so on. I used a free package called phpBB to create my forum

Launching Your Forum

For your forum to be active, it has to have a regular flow of new interesting posts to attract the targeted website traffic. So even before you launch your forum on your main website, create just three or four categories, so that it becomes easy for members to post their comments. Too many categories can be intimidating. When your targeted website traffic starts to come and the number of posts increase, you can always create more categories.
Preferably, make sure you already have some posts on your forum when you launch it. Most people will think twice about initiating the first post on an empty forum. You can have some interesting posts done by some friends and associates along with replies to these, so that your forum looks active and brings in targeted website traffic.

While most forum posts are available for reading by any visitor, you could insist that your visitors register for free to gain access to the forum posts and comment on them. A majority of targeted website traffic that is truly interested will not hesitate to comply. You can let your members create a custom signature at the end of their posts. This will make sense to them, as they will benefit from becoming a member on your forum.

Your forum must be linked to your website and appear at appropriate locations so that you can maximize the number of targeted website traffic. You can even invite visitors to discuss a particular item on your forum and get them to link to it. Mention your forum in your emails, your newsletters and on each page of your website.
