10 Ways to Get Inspired to Write
Inspiration may be found in many different forms, and when it comes to finding inspiration to write, it may sometimes seem as if those forms are fleeting. Sometimes it is those little, odd occurrences that inspire us to write. Other times it is the more mundane, everyday events we see or things we hear. At times though, it is simply the ability to self-motivated and force ourselves to plug away that pushes us onward in our writing. The following is a list of items or circumstances that might help you find inspiration when it comes to your writing.
1. Outline
Staring at a blank page can be immensely frustrating and stymie inspiration. By utilizing an outline, you can collect and organize your thoughts so that when you come back to work, you have a jumping off point from which to continue. Knowing where you are going and how you will get there with an article or story can help with inspiration.
2. Break it Down
Sometimes, breaking your writing into chunks can better inspire you to finish your work. If you are writing an article with five main points, and have already completed three, knowing that you only have two left can inspire you to finish your work rather than leave it for later.
3. Atmospheric Conditions
Meteorologists aren’t the only ones that must pay attention to atmospheric conditions. A writer might find that quiet music, the television playing in the background, sitting beside a cozy fire and other conditions that create a relaxing atmosphere are conducive to inspiration.
4. Location
The location in which you choose to write can be a great source of inspiration. You may find that places where there are no distractions other than a window or two from which you can gaze out upon a scenic landscape are inspiring. It could be that beauty and nature are more inspirational. If you’re looking for character descriptions, you may consider writing in a coffee house, taking a ride on a local commuter train or heading to the local library to find inspiration.
5. Take a Rest
Sometimes a writer can find inspiration behind the darkness of closed eyes. By lying down or just resting your eyes and blocking out distractions, you may find that you can better collect your thoughts, envision what you will be writing, and find inspiration in your mind.
6. Look Inside Yourself
What do you like to read? Chances are there will be a similar audience that enjoys the same type of content. Sometimes you can find inspiration to write just by considering your previous experience and expertise on certain topics or in related subject matter.
7. Consider the Positives
The money isn’t always great when you’re writing, but there may be other positives to your work. Maybe you are getting your name out there, giving yourself a chance to be seen by prospective clients or future customers. It could be that the pure satisfaction of writing and teaching others is enough for you or maybe writing allows you to be your own boss. Whatever the reason, the positives involved in writing could be great sources of inspiration.
8. A Great Story
Sometimes all it takes for a little inspiration is a good movie, television show, book or magazine article. While I’m not advocating stealing the ideas of others, sometimes they do serve as great inspiration and as fodder for new or better ideas.
9. Event
Historical or current, events have been the inspiration for many a story. If you don’t believe me, just look at stories ranging from “The Perfect Storm” and “Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil” to “Titanic” and “Glory”.
10. Dreams
Dreams are funny things. They can frighten, inspire, or allow you to live a life outside your own. Sometimes dreams can be great sources of inspiration when it comes to writing. Your subconscious ability to create stories you may never have thought of otherwise may provide fodder for your writing.
